If you ever walked past the classrooms recently, you probably saw a new teacher around. That is Ms. Happy, and she just joined the ASHK family! We talked to her about moving across the world, what it’s like switching schools, and what she thinks about us students.
Before moving to Hong Kong, Ms. Happy said that moving to Hong Kong was actually way easier than she thought it would be. She said that she was very excited to join ASHK, especially because all the teachers and staff were super nice and supportive. The Head of the school also helped her out a lot by handing over loads of lesson materials and slides so she didn’t have to make her own slides from scratch.
Back in the US, Ms. Happy taught high schoolers from grades 10 to 12. Those students were taking high-pressure AP classes, which meant lots of stress and crazy amounts of work. Furthermore, students and teachers barely talked to each other outside of class.
Coming here was a huge change. Teachers at ASHK actually talk to the students and hang out with other teachers. At her old school, it was really hard to talk to anybody and hang out, but here everyone stays close and works together.
Even though she loves it here, starting at a new school isn’t completely stress-free. Ms. Happy hasn’t been teaching as long as some teachers, so she feels like there are some skills that she needs to work on. Because of that, she spends a lot of extra time preparing for class and working hard to get all our assignments graded on time.
When asked about students, Ms. Happy admitted that we can be a little disruptive sometimes. But she knows that is because she can tell that the students here genuinely care about each other and want to be friends.
The next time you see Ms. Happy, make sure to say hi and welcome her to ASHK!
